Funchal
The charming capital of Madeira blends the vibrancy of a Mediterranean city with the tranquility of an island. Wander through colourful streets filled with flowers, enjoy fresh fish and local delicacies at the Mercado dos Lavradores, and admire historic churches and museums.
Surrounded by an amphitheatre of mountains, the city offers ocean views from nearly every corner. With its mild climate, lively terraces and welcoming locals, Funchal is the perfect year-round destination — just a 15-minute walk from A Casa Papaya.
Porto Santo
Madeira’s little sister and one of Europe’s best-kept secrets. Porto Santo is a small, serene island 75 km northeast of Funchal, famous for its nine kilometres of golden sandy beach — a rarity in the volcanic Madeira archipelago.
The island is perfect for a day trip or overnight stay: turquoise water, volcanic landscapes, excellent seafood and a refreshingly relaxed pace of life. History lovers will enjoy the Casa Museu Colombo, where Christopher Columbus once lived after marrying the governor’s daughter in 1479.
